"It's Now Or Never..." Brawlmachine Batrep Jan 15, 2022: Protectorate vs Skorne

After replacing Severius1 with Feora1 as her caster, Donna spent the month of January working through different lists for her Protectorate army. She wanted to see what she could make work best to support her new "in your face" leader after using more of a "keep grandpa safe in the basement" style of play trying to protect Severius for 6 months. The models she has in her army to pick from offer some really cool & dangerous (for me) synergies taking advantage of all aspects of the combined arms threats offered in Warmachine / Hordes. From Feora's more offensive spell list to heavy melee hits from her Bastions / Indictor & deadly ranged threats from Elias Gade / Repenter.

As she was working through this, I was starting to get a bit more comfortable with my limited Skorne force. As of now, I only have enough models built / painted to run a single list under the "Masters of War" theme. I have a unit of Cataphract Cetrati built that I hope to have painted in the next month or so to be able to mix things up. This play was from cold & rainy Saturday night in mid January this year.

Scenario & Terrain

We rolled a d6 to choose the scenario & played Brawlmachine Scenario 2: Binary. Two circular zones sit in the center of the battlefield; both offset a few inches towards a different army's table edge & about 4" apart from each other. There was a flag centered from left to right on each circular zone; each offset towards a different army's table edge.

For our terrain layout, we used a random terrain generator. A rubble pile (1/2 obstacle, 1/2 obstruction) was between the left zone & the Protectorate side. To the left of it was a building (obstruction); angled & just clipping the right edge of the right zone near the Protectorate side.

Another building was slightly off-center of the left zone on the edge near the Protectorate side. A forest was centered on the table clipping both zones with a stone tower (obstruction) was about 4" to the right of it inside the right zone.

A large boulder (obstruction)
was just to the left of the left zone near the Skorne side. Across from the boulder & in line with the stone tower was a stone wall (obstacle + cover) near the Skorne side.

Lists & Deployment

Donna won the starting roll & chose to go first. I chose the table edge that put both buildings closer to her deployment zone. Given that most of her models were SPD 4 - 5, I hoped the added headache of having to maneuver around the buildings would stifle her advancement & allow me to dictate where the fight would take place. My plan was to try to force her into bottlenecks where I could pick off the most forward models to weaken her army before she could do too much damage.

Protectorate of Menoth (Donna) - "Exemplar Interdiction": Feora, Priestess of the Flame with an Indictor, Revenger, & Vigilant, Reclaimer Gatekeeper with a Repenter, Exemplar Warder Elias Gade (req option), Vassal Mechanik, and a full unit of Exemplar Bastions.

Skorne (Me) - "Masters of War": Beast Master Xekaar with a Titan Gladiator, Cyclops Raider, Cyclops Savage, Razor Worm, & Aradus Scarab, Extoller Novitiate, Hakaar the Destroyer, Ancestral Guardian (req option), Mortitheurge Willbreaker, and a full unit of Paingiver Beast Handlers.

Protectorate deployed in a line formation centered on the battlefield. From left to right: Gatekeeper, Repenter, Vigilant, Revenger, Mechanik, Feora, Indictor, & the Bastions. Gade was advanced deployed in front of the Repenter, near the rubble pile.

Skorne deployed in a tight, bunched formation. From left to right: Raider, 2 Beast Handlers (stacked), Xekaar, 3 Beast Handlers (herringbone / stacked), Scarab, Savage with the last Beast Handler stacked behind him, Gladiator, Willbreaker, Novitiate, Ancestral Guardian, & Hakaar. Razor Worm advanced deployed in front of the Savage & dug-in.

Gade named the Razor Worm as his initial prey.

Under the direction of Supreme Archdomina Makeda, the Army of the Western Reaches continued its push into Protectorate territory. Beast Master Xekaar had just arrived on the outskirts of a small town in the eastern side of the Erud Hills en route to Imer.

Fueled by the righteous zeal of Menoth's flame, Feora was tasked to meet the invading Skorne army head on. Scouts reported back on what appeared to be a small recon force; likely a forward push to gain intel ahead of a larger invasion. Leading a veteran force to the west, Feora spotted the vile Skorne as they moved into the cobblestone streets of the now quiet & empty town.

Protectorate Turn 1

Indictor powered up & sped forward; running towards the center of the battlefield. Elias Gade then cautiously step up B2B with the far-side flag; raising his Crossbow in anticipation of the fight to come.

Revenger & Vigilant ran up to the right beside Gade. The Gatekeeper called out to Repenter, granting his warjack "Hurry!" to send it barreling forward next to the Indictor. Next, the Mechanik ran up B2B with the Vigilant; readying his Multi-Tool in service of the valiant warmachines standing before him.

The Gatekeeper walked up to keep his Repenter within range, while staying safely behind the protection the warjacks provided. The Bastions ran up next to the wooden building alongside Indictor.

Lastly, Feora walked up behind Indictor and cast a "Wall of Fire*" blocking the path between the forest & the stone tower. She ended her activation by casting "Hex Hammer*" on herself.

* With a blazing intensity in her eyes, Feora advances into the desolate town *

* Wall of Fire - A model entering / ending its activation in the wall of fire suffers an unboostable POW 12 fire damage roll and the fire continuous effect.

* Hex Hammer - When an enemy model declares its casting a spell in Feora's control range, the enemy spellcaster immediately suffers d3 damage points. If the enemy spellcaster is destroyed as a result, the spell does not take effect.

Skorne Turn 1

Razor Worm pierced the earth with its horn & ran forward through the forest. It came to a stop on the far edge of the forest, just behind the "Wall of Fire". The Cyclops Raider ran up outside the forest on the opposite side of the Worm. Next, Titan Gladiator cast its animus, "Rush*", on itself and ran toward the right zone; while the Cyclops Savage ran up to the right of the Raider. The Scarab then ran up between the Gladiator & Savage. Xekaar riled the Aradus beast for another fury.

Xekaar ran into the forest ahead of the Savage & discarded 4 fury. The Paingiver Beast Handler leader issued the "Press Forward" order and ran towards the center, going B2B with the Savage. He sent his troops forward with at least 1 of them going B2B with different beasts; making sure to stay in formation as they spread out. Mortitheurge Willbreaker walked as close as he could to the near-side flag & cast "Flesh Hardening*" on the Beast Handlers.

The Ancestral Guardian readied her Halberd & leapt over the stone wall as she ran towards the right zone. Hakaar ran up by her side, as the Novitiate moved up just behind them; going B2B with the near-side flag.

* Driven by the Hoksune Warrior Code, the mighty Skorne charge into battle *

* Rush - +2" movement & gains Pathfinder for 1 turn.

*Flesh Hardening - Continuous effects on target model / unit expire & it gains "Tough" for 1 round.

Protectorate Turn 2

Feora paid to upkeep the "Wall of Fire" & "Hex Hammer" and allocated 1 focus each to Revenger & Vigilant. She instructed Gade to deal with the Razor Worm first since it was the closest threat to their advancement at this point.

Raising his Crossbows, the Exemplar Warder set his sights on his prey. The first shot missed the mark just slightly to the right. The arrow plunged into a tree near the Worm. The cover provided by the forest wasn't able to keep the beast safe forever though, as the second shot slammed into Razor Worm's underbelly. The attack was catastrophic; doing 8 damage to spiral 3 to completely cripple the Worm's body.

* With a single magic blessed arrow, Gade crippled Razor Worm's body *

Both the Bastions & Indictor were too far away to attack any of the invaders. The heavy hitters chose instead to combine as a mobile wall. Pushing into the right zone to establish a presence where they taunted the Skorne to charge through the "Wall of Fire" to engage them.

Revenger's eyes lit up as it stared down the injured Razor Worm. Its coal-fired engine engaged & the warjack charged headlong into the beast. Despite being injured, the Worm was able to dodge the blow. The errant swing of the Halberd instead sliced through several branches of a nearby dogwood tree. A cloud of white flowers filled the air as the fresh bloomed petals were knocked from their perch. Revenger then slammed its Repulsor Shield into the Worm, boosting to hit this time, but was only able to do 1 damage to spiral 1.

Vigilant ran up next to the stucco house; realizing too late that the extra focus allocated was wasted since it was too far to charge the Raider. The Gatekeeper then granted "Strike True!*" to Repenter, as the light warjack lumbered into position to shoot at the Savage. Another dogwood was caught in the attack as the flames just missed the Cyclops; scorching the tree instead.

The Mechanik ran up B2B with the Vigilant. The Gatekeeper ran up B2B with the far-side flag. He made sure to keep his Repenter within his command range, while relieving Gade of his position for the Exemplar Warder would be able to advance deeper into the fight next round.

Feora walked up behind the Vigilant & Repenter to get as close to the Skorne as possible. Once in position, she popped her feat, "Scorched Earth*". Fire ripped through the air as the feat set nearly the entire Skorne army aflame. The only ones spared were the Gladiator, the Ancestral Guardian, Hakaar, the Novitiate, & a single Beast Handler.

* From safely behind her warjacks, Feora bathed the Skorne in flame *

* Strike True! - The warjack gains +2 to all of its attack rolls this turn.

* Scorched Earth - Enemy models currently in Feora's control range suffer the fire continuous effect.

Skorne Turn 2

The fire expired on both Cyclopes & 2 of the Paingiver Beast Handlers that were B2B with them. The fire would have done 9 damage to Xekaar, but the warlock spent a fury to transfer it all to the Scarab's spiral 2. The Aradus beetle's body was crippled in the flames. Razor Worm took 3 damage to spiral 6, while the Scarab somehow managed only suffer 2 damage to spiral 4 at straight dice. Coupled with the damage Xekaar transferred, the Scarab's spirit was also crippled now. The lesser beast hung on with only 2 health remaining. The fire damage was powerful enough that the Beast Handlers didn't need to make damage rolls. Instead, they leaned on the "Flesh Hardening" bestowed on them by the Willbreaker; attempting to surive through "Tough" rolls. The first fell to the flames, while the unit leader & the troop nearest to him rolled high and were simply Knocked Down.

Xekaar leeched all the fury from his beasts; going up to 5 total. Afterwards, he commanded the Raider to take aim at Indictor. Indictor's "Consecration*" ability is a bane to the warlock, as it hampers his ability to cast spells along with stopping his warbeasts from using their animi. The Raider's shot hit easily against the heavy jack's DEF 10, but its ARM 21 was too much to overcome thanks to a miserable damage roll. Even with the combination of boosting the damage & +2 from the Heavy Reiver's "Burst Fire", Indictor was unscathed; as the Cyclops rolled 7 on dice -7 (rolling 4, 2, & 1).

Enraged by his beast's inability to punish Indictor, Xekaar decided to adjust his strategy. He would have preferred to charge the heavy warjack, but was unable to get LOS far enough out of the forest to make the attack. Instead, he opted to walk out of the forest to get LOS to the Bastions & stay out of range of Indictor's "Consecration". Next, he cast "Dead Weight*" on the nearest Bastion. The spell hit for 3 damage; which was spread evenly between the warrior & 2 of his comrades thanks to their "Sanguine Bond*" ability. Feora's "Hex Hammer" spell triggered and hit Xekaar for 3 damage.

Xekaar spent his last 3 fury to cast "Psychosurgery*" to heal his battlegroup. The Scarab was healed for 3 and the Worm was healed for 4. Each of them spread the rejuvenating healing energy so that neither of them had any crippled aspects afterwards. "Hex Hammer" triggered once more & Xekaar suffered 2 damage.

The Skorne warlock popped his feat, "Whispers of Torment*", and repositioned 5" to go back into the forest while staying out of the range of "Consecration".

The invigorated Razor Worm attempted to bite into Revenger. Boosting for damage did no good however, as the roll was exactly 7 on dice -7 (rolling 3, 3, 1).

Next, the Beast Handlers activated and the 2 that were Knocked Down forfeited their Movement to stand up. The one B2B with the Raider & the one in range of the Razor Worm each used "Condition" to pull a fury off of the beast closest to them. The Beast Handler who was B2B with the Scarab used "Medicate" to heal it for 3 damage; dividing it between spirals 3 & 5. The last 2 Beast Handlers each enraged the beast closest to them; Cyclops Savage & Titan Gladiator, respectively.

The Scarab walked up to toe-in on the right zone. Blocked from being able to charge the enemy, Cyclops Savage walked through the forest to put himself between Xekaar & the Protectorate front line. The Gladiator was in a similar situation being too far back to charge the Bastions; choosing instead to run as far as it could into the right zone while staying behind the "Wall of Fire".

Mortitheurge Willbreaker moved up B2B with the near-side flag & cast "Flesh Hardening" on the Beast Handlers. With 2 of them still on fire, he hoped his support would allow them to stay in the fight next round.

Lastly, the Exalted warriors ran around the right side of the stone tower to the other side of the right zone. The Novitiate ran up to go B2B with both of them. Their hope was to either force the Bastions to split their ranks between them & the Gladiator or if the Bastions focused on the Gladiator, to be able to move in to flank them.

* Hakaar & the Guardian move in to flank the Bastions *

The round ended with each side scoring 1 point for their respective flags.

Protectorate 1 - Skorne 1

* Consecration - While within 6" of this model, enemy models cannot cast, channel, or upkeep spells.

* Dead Weight - RNG 8 POW 12 magical attack. If the attack destroys the target, an enemy model within 2" of it must forfeit its Normal Movement or Combat Action next activation.

* Sanguine Bond - When this model would suffer damage, it can spread it as you choose between any models in the unit that are in formation.

* Psychosurgery - Heal d3+1 damage points from models in this model's battlegroup currently in its control range.

* Whispers of Torment - While in Xekaar's control range, enemy models suffer -3 STR, MAT, RAT, & THR; lasts for 1 round.

Protectorate Turn 3

Feora paid to keep both "Wall of Fire" & "Hex Hammer" in play and allocated 1 focus to each of her jacks.

The Exemplar Bastion leader gave the "Press Forward" order. He & his troops charged in to attack Titan Gladiator & Razor Worm. The 2" range of their Halberds allowed all of them to swarm the warbeasts without moving into the "Wall of Fire". The Bastion charging the Worm wasn't able to overcome the restraint of Xekaar's feat & failed miserably in his charge attack.

Three of the four that charged the Gladiator were able to hit. The first two struck with devastating accuracy; doing 8 damage to spiral 5 & 11 damage to spiral 3 respectively. The last struck the beast for another 3 damage to spiral 4. While the final attack was the weakest of the 3, it finished off what the previous 2 could not & crippled its body & spirit.

* Exemplar Bastions swarm on the Skorne warbeasts *

Revenger moved slightly to the right & attacked Razor Worm. The goal was to open up LOS to the Worm for Gade in case it lived through Revenger's attacks. Boosting to hit with its Halberd, the attack connected and did 3 damage to spiral 1; boosting the damage roll as well. Needing a 10 to hit with its Repulsor Shield, the second attack missed, as Revenger had no more focus to boost with.

The Gatekeeper granted "Strike True!" to the Repenter again & the jack steadied its position to aim its Flame Thrower at the Savage. Even with all of its bonuses, Repenter still wasn't able to land the shot. Next, Vigilant charged the Savage with its Shield Fists. Boosting to hit the initial charge attack, it hit for 1 damage to spiral 6. With no more focus to boost, the second Shield Fist attacked failed to land.

Indictor was out of position to be able to charge the Savage or get an attack on Xekaar. So, it chose to support the Bastions; moving to cut off Hakaar & company. Unfortunately, it wasn't able to fit between the Bastions & the wood building, but it ran to get as close to the Exalted Skorne warriors as it could.

Feora walked up to get both Cyclopes in range for her Flame Throwers' 8" spray. Not wanting to be left unprotected, she kept her focus on her instead of boosting and none of her targets were hit from either shot. Xekaar's feat had severely crippled her force's chance to mount much offense at all this turn.

Gade took aim at the Razor Worm & managed to connect with both shots. The first hit for 4 damage to spiral 2 with the second hitting for 5 damage to spiral 1. The Worm's mind & body were both crippled in the attacks.

The Mechanik moved up B2B with the Vigilant & the turn ended with both sides scoring for their respective flags once more.

Protectorate 2 - Skorne 2

Skorne Turn 3

The fire expired on everyone except for one Beast Handler. The flames consumed the Paingiver as he failed his "Tough" check. As if that wasn't bad enough, Xekaar realized that he'd failed to build up or leave any fury on his beasts. With no beasts destroyed, he wasn't able to lean on Spirit Bond to build his power back that way either.

Mortitheurge Willbreaker debated using "Influence" to force one Bastion to attack another, but needing an 8 for the spell to work wasn't worth the risk at this point. He felt he would be better served keeping as many Beast Handlers in play as possible. So, he cast "Flesh Hardening" on them again.

The key to this turn relied on the Beast Handlers being able to move up to heal the Gladiator, Worm & Scarab...but the Scarab was blocking the path for 2 of them to get to the other beasts. Scarab activated to move into the forest and clear the way. The Beast Handlers moved into position & did what they could to "Medicate" the beasts in their charge. The Gladiator & Razor Worm were each healed for 3: 1 each from spirals 3, 4, & 5 on the Titan and 1 from spiral 1 & 2 from spiral 3 for the Razor Worm. The Scarab was healed for 2: 1 each from spirals 1 & 3.

The Gladiator & Worm were both still suffering a significant amount of damage, but at least none of them had any aspects crippled now. Razor Worm gnashed its teeth & bit into Revenger's right arm; doing 4 damage to column 6. Titan Gladiator had no choice but to walk into the "Wall of Fire" in order to get close enough to retaliate against the Bastions. The Gladiator was lit on fire, but escaped any immediate damage thanks to a weak roll against its indomitable ARM 19.

Titan Gladiator's right War Gauntlet slammed into the first Bastion for 7 damage at straight dice. Not wanting to weaken the entire unit so severely, the warrior chose not to call upon their "Sanguine Bond" & suffered the full force of the blow; sacrificing himself to protect his brothers. The left War Gauntlet attack struck the Exemplar Bastion leader for 8 damage. Again, the leader chose to suffer the full damage himself to save his brothers. The next troop in formation stepped up into position to lead the unit.

The beast then struck the next Bastion with its Tusks, but only did 3 damage at dice -1. This time, the unit stepped up to share the suffering, with all of the remaining 3 members taking 1 hit each. The Titan was forced to buy another attack with its right War Gauntlet, which hit for another 3 damage that the unit spread evenly among all 3 troops. The Titan was forced to buy yet another attack, but exhausted from the onslaught it had just unleashed, it punched nothing but air as the attack missed the Bastion leader. Xekaar refused to let up & forced the Titan Gladiator to buy one last War Gauntlet attack. This final blow landed & boosted for damage to strike the Bastion leader down for 10 damage. The troop to the right of the formation assumed command as their leader was destroyed.

The pair of Cyclopes then turned their combined attention on the Protectorate warcaster. First, the Raider stepped to the left to get LOS to Feora & let loose a shower of needles from his Heavy Reiver. Looking to only face 2 damage & not sure of what was to come from the Savage, Feora chose to suffer the hit; saving her sole focus for now.

The Savage moved in to attack with his Falchion blade, but missed the first attempt. He bought a follow-up attack & boosted to hit, but only managed to do 2 damage. Feora spent her focus to reinforce her powerfield to stave off the damage this time.

Xekaar was blocked from getting his own shots in on Feora for now. So, he turned his attention to her Arc Node. Swinging his Barbed Whips at Revenger, the Skorne warlock hit with both attacks; doing 4 damage to column 2 & 3 to column 1 to cripple the jack's left arm & take out its Repulsor Shield. With no fury to buy additional attacks, Xekaar repo'ed back 5" to go alongside the Raider near the forest.

Ancestral Guardian attempted to charge Indictor, but misjudged her charge lane. As she moved in towards the warjack, she passed just within the right-most Bastion's melee range. As she continued the charge, going into the Bastion's back arc, the Exemplar warrior hit a brutal free strike that felled the Exalted warrior for 10 damage. The Guardian failed the "Tough" check granted to her by the Novitiate & her lifeless stone body collapsed onto the battlefield. Hakaar was in range to collect her soul as she died.

The Extoller Novitiate moved to the other side of Hakaar to ensure the swordsman would have an unabated charge lane to the Indictor & not repeat the Guardian's miscalculation. The Novitiate then granted "Stones' Wrath*" to Hakaar & sent the Exalted warrior charging into the heavy warjack. Hakaar used his Great Swords' "Combo Strike*" ability & plunged both blades into Indictor's left side for 13 damage to column 2. Indictor's movement was now crippled, dropping its base DEF to 5. Hakaar thought about spending the soul he'd collected to buy another attack, but chose to keep it in place to boost his ARM.

* Hakaar charging the Indictor *

With both zones contested, each side scored another point for their flags.

Protectorate 3 - Skorne 3

* Stones' Wrath - Target friendly Faction construct model gains +2 STR for this turn.

* Combo Strike (special attack) - Make a single melee attack, but instead of making a normal damage roll, the POW is equal to this model's STR and twice the POW of this weapon

Protectorate Turn 4

Feora let "Wall of Fire" & "Hex Hammer" expire. Next, she commanded Revenger to eliminate the pesky Razor Worm once & for all. Needing a 7 to hit, the jack boosted both the attack & damage rolls. As the Halberd cut the Worm down, Xekaar opted not to reeve the fury. Elias Gade named the Cyclops Savage as his new "Prey" target.

Vigilant attacked the Savage with its Shield Fists. It boosted the attack & damage rolls for the first attack; hitting for 5 damage to spiral 6. The second Shield Fist attack hit, but failed to crack the Savage's armor.

The 2 remaining Bastions looked to destroy the Titan Gladiator. The first hit for 7 damage to spiral 5; crippling the beast's spirit. The second Consecrated Halberd also hit, landing the killing blow with 5 more damage to spiral 5. Xekaar let the beast's fury dissipate as it fell in order to prevent an abundance leading to threshold checks next turn.

* The last 2 Exemplar Bastions cleave into the Titan Gladiator to destroy it *

Repenter moved into position to unleash its Flame Thrower as its Jack Marshall granted it "Strike True!". Taking aim at the Savage, Repenter also caught the Scarab & a Paingiver Beast Handler in its fiery spray. All 3 were lit on fire & the Beast Handler died outright, he failed his "Tough" check. The Savage suffered 5 damage to spiral 6, while the Scarab took 7 damage to spiral 2 to suffer a crippled body.

Gade took aim at his "Prey" with both Crossbows, but only 1 shot found its mark. The beast suffered 2 damage to spiral 2; crippling his mind.

The Mechanik moved up B2B with Revenger. Using his Multi-Tool, he was able to repair 2 damage to the jack's left arm so that its Repulsor Shield was back in full service.

Indictor moved into range to attack Hakaar with its Banisher sword. Hitting easily, the first attack did 3 damage. Attacking next with its Shield, Indictor hit again, but wasn't able to do any more damage. Spending a focus to buy another Banisher attack & boost the damage, Hakaar was cut down for 7 damage at dice -2. Rolling a 3, the Exalted warrior failed his "Tough" check & fell to Indictor's mighty blade.

Feora cast "Engine of Destruction*" on herself and walked up to attack the Savage. Slashing at the beast with her blade of Truth, she cut it down for 11 damage. As the Cyclops was destroyed, Xekaar reeved its fury. Elias Gade made Xekaar his new "Prey".

Each side scored 1 more point for their flags as the score remained tied.

Protectorate 4 - Skorne 4

* Engine of Destruction - The spellcaster gains +2 SPD, +4 STR, & +4 MAT for 1 turn.

Skorne Turn 4

The fire continued to burn on the Scarab and, at straight dice, it was burned away & destroyed. Xekaar leeched the fury from the Raider & used Spirit Bond from his fallen beasts to replenish back up to 6 fury. The Beast Master saw the opportunity to bring this fight to a swift & decisive end as he stared down the Protectorate warcaster. With 4 of his 5 beasts fallen to the Protectorate army, he knew it if he didn't take Feora out this turn, he was not likely to leave the battlefield alive.

He forced the Cyclops Raider to take a shot at Feora. Boosting the attack & damage rolls, Feora took 5 damage. Knowing that Xekaar was preparing to charge in, she wanted to save her focus to ward off any stronger attacks to come.

With hatred burning in his eyes, the Skorne warlock charged into his foe. Needing an 8 to hit, he boosted & rolled a 10. At dice -7 the attack would have done 7 damage, but she spent a focus to reduce it to 2. He boosted his second Barbed Whip attack & boosted the damage as well. The spiked-tip of the whip slammed into Feora for 12 damage; killing her with one final, devastating blow.

After Action Review

This was an interesting play for us, because while I was on the upswing of getting a better idea of how / when to use my single Skorne list, Donna was building from the ground up; experimenting with new things in trying out several different Protectorate lists.

There were definitely some bonehead mistakes made like:

1. Me declaring the Ancestral Guardian's charge without checking to see if she'd pass through any of the Bastion's melee range / LOS.

2. Donna misallocating her focus a couple of times. She said she was sort of in her own head that night thinking too much about different aspects of Feora's abilities / spells and how to use the Repenter the best in support of her more melee-focused jacks. It was also her first play in quite a while without her Deliverer Sunburst Crew that she tends to lean on heavily.

3. Both of us moved models into position on 1 turn without thinking of how they'd block others that were going to activate later on.

4. I forgot about the Bastion's 2" melee range when I parked my Titan Gladiator behind the "Wall of Fire".

5. For as comfortable as I was getting with my Skorne, I definitely got the order of operations mixed up at least once. At least once, I activated 1 or more beasts before using the Paingiver Beast Handlers. Once everyone is into the fight later in the game, I realize that I need to have my support models go first to boost my attacking models before they activate.

6. Donna would have been better off moving Feora to a place where she could shoot at my models, but angled so that my Cyclops Raider couldn't get a clear shot with the aiming bonus & Xekaar wouldn't have a clear charge lane. She said afterwards that she knew it was risky, but she was excited to have a caster who could step up & do some melee damage. So, she risked it for the fun of seeing what Feora could do with "Engine of Destruction".
